UK-to-US GPA conversion guidance

There is no single official formula that turns a UK percentage or degree classification into a US GPA. A numerical converter without the receiving institution’s rules can give a misleading result.

Before entering a GPA on an application

  1. Read the receiving university’s instructions for international applicants.
  2. Use your original mark and grading scale if the application requests them.
  3. If conversion is required, use its named evaluation service or published mapping.
  4. Ask admissions what to enter if the form requires a 4.0 value but gives no conversion instructions.

For example, Stanford’s undergraduate international-admissions guidance says applicants do not need to convert their marks to a US GPA. Other programmes may require a different process.

Why a direct conversion fails

A UK 70 is not 70% of a US 4.0 scale. A degree classification also does not preserve the module marks and credits needed for course-level conversion. Do not multiply a UK mark by 0.04.

Use the GPA calculator only after obtaining the required course grade-point values. See also UK degree classification estimates and all tools.
